To handle the unprecedented surge in demand for mental health services, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, Metrocare is building a state-of-the-art facility in Dallas.
Located at 1353 N. Westmoreland Rd., the new 45,000-sq.-ft. mental health clinic will serve as the centerpiece of the new Hillside campus where children, adults, families, veterans, and those with disabilities will receive integrated, evidence-based care. The facility will intentionally include bright, open spaces for clinical services, outdoor therapy areas for children, a tranquility garden, an outdoor terrace, and abundant nature views for clients and staff from two new buildings.
The entire campus expands capacity to serve by 23%, which means roughly 13,000 more people can receive services annually – 5,000 of those being children.
Metrocare is the largest provider of behavioral health services in Dallas County and provides same-day access to psychiatric care regardless of ability to pay. Across all programs, Metrocare served 51,031 children and adults last year with 2,758 clinical encounters each day.
According to Forbes, Texas ranks #1 as the worst state for mental health care. Texas has the second highest percentage of adults with a mental illness who are uninsured (21.4%) and has the second highest percentage of youth with depression who do not receive mental health services (74.9%).
“We recognize the crucial link between someone’s physical environment and their emotional wellbeing,” Metrocare CEO Dr. John Burruss said in a press release. “These cutting-edge facilities will be vital in eradicating the stigma and shame that has long plagued public mental health care. It’s a disheartening reality that marginalized communities, particularly low income or communities of color, or those with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, have frequently been relegated to subpar facilities – told to settle for less than they deserve. It’s long overdue to invest in our community.”
The new Hillside Campus is set to be fully operational in Fall of 2025.
