Dallas fire officials are investigating a fire that killed an elderly man in east Oak Cliff Sunday morning.
In response to multiple 911 calls, Dallas Fire-Rescue units were dispatched at about 5:12 a.m. to a structure fire at a home located at 1419 E. Overton Road.
Crews arrived to find “heavy fire” coming from a detached structure located behind the one-story home.
Because there were reports of people possibly being inside the structure, firefighters worked to suppress the fire and began search-and-rescue operations, according to a statement obtained by the Dallas Morning News.
An “unknown number of people” were able to make it out of the structure safely, according to the statement. However, an elderly man did not make it out, authorities said.
The victim has not been identified. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to any of the surrounding structures, and it was ultimately declared extinguished at about 6:20 a.m.
No other injuries were reported.
