Tokoloshe is a ghost story about loss. A fable about the myth of motherhood and motherlands,” Hayward stated in a news release.

She says she “worked members of South African tribes to source the work.”

Hayward’s plays have previously been produced by Kitchen Dog Theatre, Echo Theatre, Our Productions Theatre Co., Noveau 47 Theatre, Goat Song Collective, Audacity Theatrelab and Rover Dramawerks.

The cast includes actors Ehleshea Woodruff, Drew Denton, Sterling Shea, Danielle Pickard, Gabe Whitehurst and Cory Carter.

“This story is rooted in the last century, yet still driven by current events,” Hayward said in the release. “The themes addressed in 1947 are still relevant in 2022. We are all connected by a nebulous web of often unseen bonds. Bringing such stories to light is the only way real growth and societal change might occur.”

The play is directed by Jule Nelson-Duac, whose credits include IMPRINT Theatreworks, Stolen Shakespeare Guild, Shakespeare Theatre Company and Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles.

It is presented as the third piece in a series of new works made possible by Oak Cliff-based nonprofit Over the Bridge Arts and the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.

Tickets cost $5 for shows at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, and 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26.
