Get used to hearing Sam Cormier’s name. Fresh out of Oak Cliff’s thriving music scene, Cormier has one of the neighborhood’s best voices in both his music and his contagious positivity and on-stage energy.

“The community we create around music was the highlight of college for me,” says Georgetown graduate Cormier, “When I moved back to Dallas in 2021, I immediately began looking for that same musical community.”

Since moving back, Cormier has spent his time playing open mics, record stores and Sofar Sounds concerts.

“Something about my first house show in Oak Cliff felt different,” he says, “I was so close to everyone listening and it was the first time I felt like a real musician.”

Oak Cliff’s artistic fraternity continues to spread its wings across all barriers and city lines, with Cormier as one of the newest faces to enter the culture. He released “American Denim” in December, a swelling acoustic anthem that marks his first track on streaming.

“Music has been my oldest friend,” Cormier says, “As a queer artist, my musical journey is just as much about personal discovery as it is sonic discovery.”

His roots in the queer community continue to motivate him artistically.

“That feeling of freedom when you are dancing with people who accept you,” he says, “To have a good cry and then dance the night away.”

Cormier says he’s working on his first EP to be released in March, and is performing at Sofar Sounds shows in Austin and the New New Festival in Dallas.
