The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) received the authorization at last Wednesday’s meeting for a total of $19,224,500. The project is currently approved through the Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program, which provides funding to states to address deficient highway bridges located on any public road.

The bridges to receive the funding are the Houston Street Bridge and Jefferson Boulevard Bridge, both which cross over Interstate 30 and the Trinity River.

According to the Trinity River Corridor Project, prior to the passage of this funding, the Jefferson Bridge was in the planning stage for the consideration of a replacement with a six lane two way bridge to provide a direct connection to IH-35E. This would change the existing bridge and traffic interchange at Zan Boulevard.

No plans have been previously published by the Trinity River Corridor Project regarding the Houston Street Bridge. According to a representative with TxDOT, the agreement with the City will include maintenance work to the two bridges, such as pavement updates to the bridge deck and the structure underneath, and no new right of way or changes to lane configurations.

Exact details of the project are not finalized yet. The project is estimated to begin the design process March 2026 with construction completion estimated for December 2029.
